Ian Branda

Boulder Denim Athlete Ian BrandaIan Branda | London, ON

What he's known for:

I grew up in the competition climbing world where I represented Canada on the international stage in 2008, 2012, and 2013. When I left for university, I stepped out of the gym and turned my focus towards the mountains: climbing, snowboarding, and eventually BASE jumping.

His story:

Like most climbers, I realized at a young age that I wasn't cut out for team sports like hockey or baseball, however when I was 8, I fell in love with snowboarding. My parents knew that I needed something to keep me fit and active all year, so they kept trying to find me an organised sport. When I was 11, my mom signed me up for a climbing class that fed into the competitive youth team at the local gym and I got hooked immediately.

Growing up in North Vancouver, I had no shortage of climbing role models; almost everyone on the Edge team had made the national team at some point. I decided that I was going to work hard and one day I'd be on the national team too. In 2008 I had my first taste of success when I got to compete at the Continental Championships (now the Pan-American Championships) in Montreal.

Throughout my youth, I dabbled in other sports, mainly snowboarding and longboarding, but I also tried diving and cross-country running. After a few years of coming close to making the national team I decided to hang up my other interests and try to push my climbing to the next level. Finally my hard work paid off and I made it! I got to go compete in Singapore for lead and again the next year in Saanich for both lead and speed. Since then I've put competition climbing behind me, earned an engineering degree, and picked up snowboarding again.

My goal as a Boulder Denim athlete is to push the limits of what these jeans can do. From snowboarding in Vermont to crashing motorcycles in Vietnam to planting trees in the wilderness of Northern BC to hiking mountains in New Zealand, I'm here to show that Boulder Denim jeans are the most versatile, and comfortable jeans you will ever own.

Words he lives by:

One of my first climbing coaches, Andrew Wilson, always told us to focus only on what we can control. I've used this philosophy in every aspect of my life and it's been my key to always being happy and stress-free.

I also try to live by the motto "Good Vibes Only" whenever I can.
